Tips for a Safe Spring Break

The Spring Break recess, much anticipated by students across the country, is upon us. Fun and relaxation await all those who have put in their half-semester’s worth of work. Unfortunately, for some, this short vacation can lead to very long-term consequences. Specifically, we all have to remember that the “break” is not about breaking the law. What follows are some tips for a safe Spring Break.

Statistics show that arrests often increase in famous Spring Break destinations. Vacationers, often under the influence of drugs, alcohol or peer pressure, can find themselves in difficulties with the law for something as minor as a traffic offense to something much more serious. Here are a few tips to keep you out of trouble.

  1. First, make a firm decision about personal boundaries prior to going out to have fun. The time to decide if you are going to use illegal drugs offered to you at a party is not in the moment. You must exercise responsible decision-making before the temptation arises.
  2. Second, recognize the legal doctrine of vicarious liability. You can get into trouble for behaviors that you personally did not do but simply because you were in the company of others who acted illegally their actions, is some cases, can be imputed to you. If you see someone acting irresponsibly, act accordingly.
  3. Third, don’t let the vacation mind-set put you too much at ease. For example, don’t drink and drive thinking that “everyone is doing it.” Also, make sure you know the laws of your vacation destination.
  4. Fourth, make sure you have emergency contact information on hand in the event you do find yourself in trouble.
